The first steps towards working together began shortly after the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2023. At that time, the number of flights was increasing significantly, but the pilots’ working conditions remained unchanged.
Around the same time, emails were being sent by the company management, which we disagreed with in both style and content. We also didn’t support the anonymous emails that some pilots likely used to express their dissatisfaction. Instead, we decided to start proper discussions with the company.
Together, we wrote a letter from the pilots with the goal of improving communication between the company and pilots, reducing pilot turnover, creating a plan that many pilots would support, addressing potential issues ahead of time, avoiding the hiring of seasonal contractors, and at least returning to the conditions we had before COVID.
In May 2023, we set up the SMART CHAT server on the Discord platform. In less than a year, we built a community of over 300 active pilots flying Boeing 737s.
On June 29, 2024, a union was created to improve the working conditions of commercial pilots at SMARTWINGS a.s.
This was the result of our efforts to improve employee conditions and communicate with the employer, giving these efforts more legitimacy and legal backing in negotiations.
